Silk sarees are often the ones we keep the longest. A little care in how you fold and store them is what lets them last. Here is how to do it at home.
**The short version:** Wrap each silk saree on its own in a soft muslin or cotton cloth, never plastic. Keep it in a cool, dry, dark cupboard, folded rather than hung. Refold along a new line every few months so the zari and the creases do not weaken. Store it clean, with neem or cloves nearby.
Why does silk need more care than cotton?
Silk is a natural protein fibre, and the zari woven into it is real metal thread. Both react to moisture, air and pressure over time.
Stored badly, silk can yellow, the zari can darken, and the fabric can weaken along the folds. None of that is hard to avoid. It just needs the right wrap, the right spot, and a refold now and then.
How should you wrap and store a silk saree?
Wrap each saree on its own in a soft muslin or cotton cloth. Natural cloth lets the silk breathe and keeps dust, damp and insects away.
Skip plastic covers. They trap moisture, which can yellow the silk and turn the zari dark. Keep the wrapped saree in a cool, dry, dark cupboard, away from direct sunlight.
How do you store a silk saree, step by step?
1. Make sure it is clean and fully dry first. Have silk with zari or embellishments dry cleaned before long storage. 2. Wrap each saree on its own in a muslin or cotton cloth. Do not use plastic. 3. Fold it gently along the grain, and slip acid-free tissue into the folds to protect the zari. 4. Lay it flat or roll it loosely. Keep heavy sarees folded, not hung. 5. Store it in a cool, dry, dark cupboard. Add a silica gel pack, and keep neem or cloves nearby.
Should you hang or fold silk sarees?
Fold heavy silk sarees. Hanging pulls on the weight of the fabric and strains the pallu and border, which can stretch or tear over time.
A light silk can hang for a short while on a wide, padded hanger. For anything heavy, or for long storage, folding or loose rolling is safer.
How do you stop the zari from darkening?
Zari is silver or gold coated thread, so moisture and air are what dull it. Keeping the saree dry does most of the work.
Keep it out of plastic, wrap the zari-heavy pallu and border in soft cloth or tissue, and refold every few months so air and pressure do not sit on the same spot for years.
How often should you refold silk sarees?
Every three to six months, along a different fold line each time.
Left in one fold for years, silk weakens and cracks where it is creased. Changing the fold spreads the stress and is one of the simplest ways to make a silk saree last. It is also a good moment to air it out in the shade and check for damp or insects.
Do and don't, in short
**Do** - Wrap in muslin or cotton - Store clean and fully dry - Fold heavy sarees flat - Refold every few months - Keep neem or cloves nearby
**Don't** - Store in plastic covers - Hang heavy silk sarees - Use newspaper between folds - Spray perfume on the silk - Let mothballs touch the fabric
A note on cloth you keep
A silk saree is often passed from one person to the next. How you fold and store it is what makes that possible. Wrapped well and refolded now and then, a good silk saree can stay soft and bright for decades, ready to be worn again.
